Prof. Joseph Smith
Joseph Smith is a Professor at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute and an Affiliate Associate Professor of the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington. His research focuses on P. falciparum blood stage development and malaria pathogenesis. His laboratory studies the var gene/P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1). Goals of the lab are to characterize critical parasite-host binding interactions and to understand molecular disease mechanisms associated with infected erythrocyte sequestration in blood microvessels. In recent years, the lab has defined a unique subset of PfEMP1 associated with severe malaria and in developing in vitro models to investigate microvascular disease mechanisms in malaria.
